The Collections include a rich collection of documents used for research into the history of Polish artistic life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collections were created from materials and documents provided by the Ministry of Culture and Art, other state institutions and private individuals. Over time, handwritten documents on the history and documentation of theatre, film, literature, music and folk art were added to the existing materials.
The collection contains over 2,000 inventory numbers (ranging from 1 to several hundred archival units), 1,983 microfilms, 281 photocopies and approximately 1,000 microfiches. Available catalogues: alphabetical, provenance, doctoral dissertations, plays, alphabetical catalogue of the IPS Archive, catalogue of microfilms and photocopies. The archives include the legacies of artists and theatre actors, as well as research documents of art historians, musicologists and theatre historians. The materials related to literature consist mainly of letters from Polish writers found in various correspondence collections. In addition, the collection includes microfiches with archived old prints from the library of Count Leopold Cicognara (1767-1834), which has been part of the Vatican Library in Rome since 1824.

The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences is the only institution in Poland that has microfiches with archived old prints from the famous library of Count Leopold Cicognara (1767–1834), which has been part of the Vatican Library in Rome since 1824. The library collection of Cicognara, author of the first outline of the history of modern Italian sculpture and works on the theory of classicism, is a valuable and rich source of knowledge about the history, practice and theory of art, as well as collecting, archaeology and ancient traditions. The IS PAN received copies of old prints on microfiche free of charge in 1996 as part of The Cicognara Project, thanks to Prof. Philipp Fehl, who headed the programme, and The Samuel H. Kress Foundation, which supported the entire undertaking.

The catalogue Sichergestellte Kunstwerke im Generalgouvernement is a printed, carefully bound and editorially impressive report by Kajetan Mühlmann, Special Representative for the Inventory and Protection of Works of Art and Cultural Monuments in the General Government for the occupied Polish territories, on the activities of Mühlmann and his office, which lasted from October 1939 to June 1940, aimed at securing and seizing, in the interests of the German Reich, and ultimately confiscating, the most valuable cultural assets from the General Government.
