Detailed fields of research: research work in the field of film history comprising selected phenomena of European and world cinema, with particular emphasis on Polish cinematography (including research on film genres and the work of individual directors, as well as the cultural contexts of cinema). Film theory studies encompassing the theory of film genres, the theory of film narration, semiotics, psychoanalysis, cognitive studies and deconstructionism, among others. Research in the field of media and audiovisual culture focuses on the social, communicational and cultural conditionings of television and audiovisual media. The subjects of research also include the history of film and history in films, avant-garde films, film and TV genres, documentary, the sacred, religion and spirituality in cinema, the relationship between theatre and film, the aesthetic of film, film versus ethics, the cinematic image and images in films, cinema in search of an identity, contemporary fears and concerns in film, film narrative, the author in films, the autobiographical approach, national cinematographies (including Polish, Scandinavian, Austrian, British, Asiatic), the links among film, photography and reality, film and ideology, anthropology and film, speech, sound and music in film, the actor and the film character, new media, a portrait of the artist in film, the city in film, monographs of filmmakers and film genres, multiculturalism in cinema, social realism in film.
