Polish Socialist Realism and the Plight of Its Public
This talk is part of a larger book project that reexamines Socialist Realism in Stalinist Poland (1949–1956) through the lens of spectatorship. Focusing on the First and Third Nationwide Exhibitions of Polish Visual Arts (I i III Ogólnopolska Wystawa Plastyki)—held at the National Museum in Warsaw in 1950 and at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in 1952—I draw on unpublished archival materials to reconstruct how contemporary audiences encountered Socialist Realist displays. Two sculptures awarded top prizes by state-run juries will serve as case studies: Alfred Wiśniewski's Granica pokoju (1950) and Stanisław Horno-Popławski's Matka Belojannisa (1952). Comparative analysis through the lens of reception will show how viewers assessed Socialist Realist works—and to what extent their criteria diverged from the state's official ideological claims. The talk will address what this reception evidence suggests about the limits of didactic exhibition practice under Stalinism and outline the project’s broader argument about the gap between institutional knowledge-production and cultural policy.
Patryk P. Tomaszewski is a historian of art and visual culture and an Adjunct Instructor at Fordham University. His research focuses on twentieth-century Central and Eastern Europe, particularly the relationship between cultural production, state-sponsored exhibitions, and public reception in early communist Poland. Among his recent publications is an article on the 1947–1949 touring exhibitions program under Stalinism, forthcoming in Curator: The Museum Journal. He holds a Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center, an M.A. from New York University, and a B.A. from Fordham University.
